June 2012 - Afternoon Tea Your Majesty?
Bedford Swan hotel is celebrating its connections with The Queen by opening a Jubilee afternoon tea marquee.
Hotel manager Dominic Mills was delighted to discover that today’s Monarch had once been photographed waving from the front balcony of the building - the picture was taken by the Bedfordshire Times. Then, still Princess Elizabeth, the royal visitor was in the town on February 14th 1946 as part of her work with the Land Army girls organisation. Of course Her Majesty has visited Bedford since, but never again waved to the crowds from the Bedford Swan Hotel balcony.
“It’s a moment of history which shows how important the hotel has been to the town. We are making the connection with another great moment in Bedfordshire history, the invention of ‘Afternoon Tea’ by a former Duchess of Bedford.
“Our Afternoon Teas are famous all year round, but we are hoping to help everyone celebrate the Jubilee in a civilised fashion in our riverside marquee which will be serving teas on from Saturday June 2nd - Tues June 5th.
“We don’t know for sure, but would like to think The Queen had time for Afternoon Tea when she visited here in 1946!”
